"Flag in the Window" © Stuart Forster
This photograph shows an England flag hung in a shop window in the high street of Berwick upon Tweed during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The town's magnificent town hall is a minor detail compared to the flag of St George which bears the three lions crest of the English football association. I thought this was interesting as the flag of St George has replaced the union jack at English football games over the past couple of decades. Berwick's position on the border of England and Scotland makes showing an interesting statement too. Wouldn't the union jack be more appropriate here? The England team under performed and flags, which had been flown so prominently in the run up to the tournament, were then harder to find.
