Statement
"Although I was born and grew up in Birmingham, my mum and dad
were from Essex and Yorkshire respectively. My mum's parents emigrated
to New Zealand in 1974, 5yrs before I was born - so throughout my formative
years, I spent far more time in Yorkshire than in Essex, where we would
occasionally pay visits to my Great Aunts and Uncles, who lived in South
Ockenden, near Grays.
Since moving to London I have visited Essex to photograph on a number
of occasions, although with no fixed goals; When I heard about the What
is England project, I saw it as an opportunity to make further trips
to Essex to find out more about both my and my mother's roots in the
county."
